Review: sugarless Blues Gourmet Fresh Mint Dark Chocolate

First of all, this chocolate bar is NOT paleo. It is low-carb, low-sugar and gluten-free. But it is definitely something to be avoided on a paleo lifestyle. That being said, I am reviewing this because I didn’t pay attention when I picked it up. All I thought was, “Ooh chocolate! Ooh sugarless chocolate!”

This Sugarless Fresh Mint Dark Chocolate bar, which I purchased from SunMoon, contains: Maltitol, Cocoa Paste (Minimum Cocoa 52%), Cocoa Butter, Inulin, Cocoa Powder, Soy Lecithin, Natural Mint Flavour. There are 12 squares in the package and each square contains 39 calories and 0.02 gram of carbs.

This would be perfect for a low-carb diet if all you’re concerned about is the carb count. However, the paleo diet is concerned about processed crap as well so this is a no-no. The problematic ingredients in this are the inulin and soy lecithin. I also did some research on maltitol, which is a sugar substitute, and found mixed reviews about it. On one hand, it won’t impact your blood sugar as much as sucrose and is thus suitable for diabetics, but on the other hand, it may cause flatulence and a queasy stomach.

As for the taste, I am happy to report that it didn’t have that fake sugar taste of stevia. The texture was also good, albeit slightly drier than regular chocolate. However, it didn’t taste like a dark chocolate at all. It was still too sweet for me while the mint flavour slightly overpowered the chocolate taste.

To satisfy your chocolate craving, I think it is better to just buy Lindt Excellence Extra Dark Chocolate 85%, which contains chocolate, sugar, cocoa butter, vanilla and natural flavor. The carb count is higher because it uses regular sugar but it tastes like how dark chocolate should.

What I like about Blues Gourmet Sugarless Fresh Mint Dark Chocolate: Low carb, low sugar, perfect treat if you’re on a low-carb diet with less than 0.1 gram of carb per square. No fake sugar taste.

What can be improved: Not cheap at S$8.20, doesn’t taste “dark” enough, mint taste a tad too strong. Not paleo. May make me run to the toilet if I consume too much of it (haven’t tested this out yet). Won’t buy again.
