Top 3 weird and wonderful diets

If you think the paleo diet is strange, think again. While some people cannot grasp the idea of eating healthy, whole food with minimal processed meals, other people around the world are taking their food choices to another level altogether. Here are the top 3 weird and wonderful (some might call them wacky) diets.

1. Fruitarianism

This diet, like its name suggests, is a diet consisting largely (more than 75%) of raw fruit. It is a subset of veganism and closely related to raw foodism, which we will talk about later. The other 25% of this diet usually include vegetables, nuts and seeds.

In this category, we have people from The Banana Girl (yes, that’s the name of her website and it’s very catchy, I must say) to ultra marathon runner Michael Arnstein.

First up, we have Freelee the Banana Girl, who hails from Australia. She stirred up controversy when she posted a YouTube video of herself eating 51 bananas a day.

She eats no cooked food until 4pm, usually eating mono meals – which means making meals out of one type of food only – of melons, pineapples and of course, bananas. What do you thrive on?

What do you thrive on?

What makes you feel alive? What kind of diet makes your skin glow, your hair soft and satiates you? What gives you energy to run for hours on end or helps you recover more quickly after an intense workout?

I like the word “thrive.” It implies not merely existing but living with vibrancy. It suggests a life bursting with energy. I thrive on good books, storytelling, exhilarating sports and the love of people close to me.

But here I want to focus on one specific thing: our diets.

I started thinking recently that it seems that there is no one perfect diet. Sure, there is general consensus that we should eat unprocessed food, avoid sugar and chemicals. But within this general consensus, you have vegans and you also have the paleo types. Within the paleo types, there are people who advocate a low-carb, high-fat diet as carbohydrates are unnecessary for our well being. Then there are others who eschew dairy. Then there are people who say that white rice is a safe starch and others who avoid it at all cost. It can all be very confusing.

Books to inspire running

I have a love-hate relationship with running. It can be dreadfully boring when you’re pounding away on the treadmill but can also be euphoric when you cross the finishing line of a race. I like that it helps me keep fit but I hate the feeling of my lungs bursting when I sprint.

One good way to motivate myself to run is to read books about running. They can be novels or autobiographies but I found that autobiographies are more inspiring for me because they are about what people can do in the real world. When  you read about people doing ultra marathons (Scott Jurek), my 5 km run seems pathetic in contrast.

The first running novel I read was Once a Runner by John L. Parker.
